In November and December this year the The New Hard Entertainment film crew came to live as artist in residences in the FILTER Detroit house to work on their film project with Detroit artists and actors from out of town. As a site for their film they used the former Woods cathedral church building, which they first had to clean out before using it. With the support and help of Detroit’s arts community and the immediate neighborhood they transformed it into an active space for live film shoots while hosting brunches or organizing parties.

After three months of intensive on-site work they finished their film feature “The Man of Dodge City“. A film that somehow is a documentary of time and place in Detroit. Take a look on Vimeo to watch the trailer. Just before Christmas the crew dismantled and backed to go their homes in Oregon, Washington State and New York.

End of December 2010 FILTER Detroit welcomed the new long-term residents in the house. One of the resdidents is Detroiter Anderson Walworth, also known as the vocalist, guitar and bass player of the Detroit rock band ICrime and IT- Coordinator of the Allied Media Conference. Anderson shared the house together with the performance couple The Hinterlands (Liza Bielby and Richard Newman), who just moved from Milwaukee to Detroit to look for a sustainable environment for their physical theater company.

After a few months of location scouting they found the perfect place to stage their newly developed theater piece at the historic Jam Handy Film Studio. After a hot summer of rehearsals and puppet making they premiered their their site-specific, psychedelic Western „Manifest Destiny (there was blood on the saddle)“ on the 4th of August in Detroit, followed up by three further sold out performances.

Manifest Destiny is involving the Wild West Show Culture as background material. The language of Cormac McCarthy and William S. Burroughs has inspired it. As a variety format of the Western tradition the Hinterlands involved different styles into the piece, from a puppet show to foot races – making it a participatory experience for the theater goers. As Richard Newman stated it was not a forced act, but rather gave the opportunity of participation- as a matter fact the audience had to move throughout the space to follow the play. A play that is looking at history, the western frontier, the pioneering and yet asks questions about this process and culture that extends into today’s engagement with and in the world. The Detroit audience was thrilled and if you want to experience and learn more about the multi-disciplinary work of the Hinterlands and their future projects check out their website. http://thehinterlandsensemble.org

Detroit resembles this living potpourri of different cultures and artistic agency that to the most part engages community. One may ask what do you mean by community? Good question – it is such an overused terminology for all sorts of contexts that it almost lost its meaning. In this case it is concerning the people that live in a city like Detroit and that shape and make Detroit.

End of May Kerstin Niemann and FILTER Detroit residency guest Chris Köver (Missy Magazin) experienced the Detroit Electronic Music Festival called Movement. An annual series of electronic dance music showcases held in Detroit since 2000. Thanks to the support of Underground Resistance we were able to access and witness old school and emerging acts of electronic dance music. An amazing experience seeing about 100.000 people invading the city center of Detroit.

Growing up with electronic music let us appreciate initiatives and acts as well as old-fashioned techno dress code obedient visitors of the festival. We enjoyed the most the adjacent acts and events that were taking place outside the festival territory. Derrick May organized an amazing art show at his place with artists such as Jessica Care Moore or mash street culture artist Mike Han. For the most part Omar-S blew our minds, he made us jump and dance all night at 1515 Broadway. By the way during daytime you can enjoy excellent Croissants and Café at 1515 Broadway.

But dancing makes hungry and we made sure to eat the good stuff. Thanks god Aladdins Sweets & Cafe is only 8 minutes walking from the FILTER Detroit residency on Conant Street. This Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant provides noutricious dishes and certainly sweets.

The Bangladeshi neighbors of FILTER Detroit are much more inclined in growing and cooking their own foods. Around lunch time you have these great mélange of home cooking scents in the air. Since the beautiful backyard of the FILTER Detroit residence provides space it was time to look into growing your own food. And it makes sense because Detroit somehow evolved into this Mecca for urban farming, so there are ways of starting out without knowing too much about gardening and without investing too much money into it.

Together with Liza Bielby (The Hinterlands), the residents of the FILTER Detroit residency I signed up for the Garden Resource Program in Detroit. Through urban gardening and agriculture projects they engage with community. They count ca. 15.000 urban gardeners in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park. As participants of this program we received practical advice, seeds (sunflower, chamomile, etc.) transplants (peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, etc) and were encouraged to volunteer and network into the neighborhood cluster programs. First of all Chris Köver and me built a small raised garden bed with four wooden timber posts and fresh garden mould. Liza and me hardened the transplants for about 48 hours and then planted the transplants and seeds end of May. Hoping that something will come out of it by late summer, fall.

P 12645 FILTER Detroit, Volume 1 started as a series of discussions and seminars in and outside of Detroit. Over the course of one year it evolved into a 10-day research field trip of 8 Urban Heritage PhD students to FILTER DETROIT. A collaboration with the graphic design department of the College for Creative Studies, by name Susan LaPorte and her class and a series of on site visits and investigations to artists, urban farmers, activists, cultural institutions and urban planners in Detroit resulted in a series of essays and visuals, written by PhD students, Kerstin Niemann, Prof. Dr. Frank Eckardt, Susan LaPorte and Jessica Tiernan. A class of design students from CCS added their perspective and styles in correlation to the texts. P12645, a group of three amazing young designers , Amanda Matzenbach, Jessica Tiernan and Martin Wysor, offered one of the most challenging design solutions and made this publication come to live.

In their retail storefront Design 99 will present a documentation of the work of Hamburg artist Jörn Stahlschmidt together with a CD of his collaborative music project Dissamonix. FILTER already exhibited sculptor, drawer, painter and musician Stahlschmidt in a single and several group presentations in and outside of Hamburg.

With the support of “WSW#3″ aka the Association for Contemporary Art Hamburg, FILTER is able to spend time in Detroit. The third edition of „WSW“ (dt.-Wir sind woanders / engl. -we’re somewhere else) is relating to the issues of “traveling” and “demonstrating presence”. As part of the “WSW#3” missions every participant, such as FILTER, introduces Hamburg’s art initiatives and activities to the visited city and its citizens. Therefore FILTER asked Design 99, who believe that contemporary architecture and design is not reserved for a select audience, to develop a design for the so-called „Hamburger Koffer“ (dt. Hamburg suitcase), a suitcase full of information about various independent art spaces and initiatives in Hamburg.

For more information about the participating initiatives please visit their websites:

Design 99 - http://www.visitdesign99.com

The introduction of Jörn Stahlschmidt’s work to the city of Detroit as well as the collaborative work of Design 99 for the „Hamburg Koffer“ is the beginning of a pursuing investigation of FILTER with artists, musicians, designers, architects and cultural activists in and with the city of Detroit.

Together with Design99 (US), Partizan Publik (NL), Femke Lutgerink (NL), Toby Barlow (US) and others FILTER tries to refurbish an empty house in Detroit. It is planned to establish a cultural exchange with the house and its immediate neighborhood. Among others Hamburg artists should be enabled to investigate and work there in the future.

Celine Condorelli (UK) presents the idea of ” Eastside Projects “, a recently opened experimental exhibition space for contemporary art and culture in Birmingham. *The lecture of Celine Condorelli is in English!

5th of June 2008, 7pm

location: P40, Alte Pathologie, Friedrichsberger Strasse, Barmbek-Süd

„Support Structure”

“Eastside Projects” is an organization led by artists, promoted from the Arts Council England West Midlands (ACEWM) in connection with the Birmingham City University (BCU), which understands itself as an incubator of new ideas and forms of art related activities in the city of Birmingham and beyond.
At this place it is worked on the development of a new type of exhibition platform, a complex, developing program with reference to radical historic positions and a gallery space specific identity.

“Eastside Projects” is a unique example of an art space where design, organization and architecture are an integral component of the program. The gallery manager Gavin Wade cooperates with the architect Celine
Condorelli and the graphic designer James Langdon to maintain a visual and spatial development in the course of the time. The building allows developing itself, to change and to grow in accordance with creative needs.

These conditions are dependent on a flexible and changing exhibition structure and depend on a strong integration in its direct as well as bigger context. (www.eastsideprojects.org)

We are looking forward to present this form of co-operation and conceptual development particularly in regards to the conceptual future of P40. In connection with this lecture we invite you to a small dinner in P40 where you will have the possibility to discuss concepts and strategies for the advancement of P40 together with locally involved guests from the area of art and culture, architecture, design, but also from the field of urban development.

We ask you to register for this event.

11.11, 3-5pm

Wonderful occurrences and other fairytales

Mythical creatures, forms and colors – to understand life and the world as it is, as it is told to be, as it can be, as it must be or shall never be. The combination of imagination and reality in stories, oral traditions, images and objects can create new structures of thinking and possibilities to obtain knowledge, to recognize relations and to ask questions. Angela Carter, a journalist and storyteller, summarized the characteristic of oral story telling, classic fairy tales like the Brothers Grimm as well as the postmodern fairy tale as follows: “As fairy tales, folk tales, stories from the oral tradition, all of them are the most vital connection we have with the imaginations of the ordinary men and women whose labor created our world. ”

In how far three different artistic positions reflect these stories in their own way sharpen the perception or activate thoughts, you can eventually experience in this exhibition. In her series of 16 drawings, Nina Lola Bachhuber (USA) is using the medium of drawing as a lyrical element. Within one drawing occur changes between the realms of abstraction and figuration. The detailed lines and organic structures play with the human perception of familiar shapes and bodies. Yesim Akdeniz Graf (D) produced specially a collage painting for the exhibition. You can see a young woman next to a portrait of an elderly lady. Loaded with drama the image is represented like a performative act. Thus the painting is an ideal breeding ground for a narrative. Referring to the question about her subjects and motives Akdeniz Graf states: “Images are metaphors of the stories that interest me. I am developing certain logic for my pictures and then they do resolve again. The resolution opens the way to something else.” Whereas Henk Visch (NL) exposes the traditional lines of modern sculpture, between figuration and abstraction. His provocative presentation of details, and the abstraction of his objects are suspense. In association to that the viewer may create new forms between perception and memory.

Furthermore FILTER invited interested contemporary fairy- and storytellers to send their story to FILTER. All incoming stories can be looked at during the exhibition, among others documentations and stories from: David Tompkins (USA), Dirk Meinzer (D), Georges Le Bar (USA), Gil + Moti (NL), Birgit Schlieps (D), Andreas L. Hofbauer (D), Konstantin Griesser (D), Doris Kollmann (D), Christian Klose. A selection of the fairytales and stories sent in will be presented on the 11th of October, 3-5pm, if not even of the fairytale tellers personally.

INFILTRATION AND SOUND(E)SCAPE
Wanna get away >from it all? Tired with the daily routine?
To listen to music can be like entering another dimension,
an escape from reality, but it can also be like travelling in time,
something that triggers memory, so that places and situations
connected to the sound are coming to mind. The five invited
artists of Infiltration and Sound(e)scape examine and
contextualize sound experiences and acoustic environments of
the everyday life in (urban) space,
Including scientific ways of looking at things Bogomir Ecker´s
themes are scene perception and communication, in particular sight and hearing.
He infiltrates the gallery space with a metallic ear sculpture.
Cao Fei?s video Hip Hop Fukuoka (2005) captures every day people
moving to a steady rhythm that appears like a performative
re-enactment of music video of the early days of MTV.
Rock is my Life, and this is my Song is a quote from a
Bachman-Turner-Overdrive? record that becomes the focus
point of Jakob Jensen´s sculptural sound installation.
In his paper drawings Carlos Roque mixes popular culture
and comic books that visually examines urban culture and the
predominant role of the values of rock music.
Stefan Roigk creates a black and white wall piece.
It is a sound piece without hearing sound, paper collage,
an assemblage of photographs and text fragments,
put together in form of a score.

Erwin van Doorn
Escape Tour

Idee

Escape Tour

Idea
2003, a group of artists from Eindhoven (NL) with an urge to start a collective:
To form some ground rules for a manifest they applied the method of a questionnaire.
It was soon figured out that the questions don’t call for answers, but instead evoke more questions.
In reaction to that Erwin van Doorn (Eindhoven based artist) shaped the idea of the Escape Tour.

Process and Realization
Which question provokes a reaction? Encouraged through this process Erwin van Doorn started to ask directors,
initiators, organizers, curators, writers etc. from cultural institutions for a question.

After receiving the first questions it was time to think about how to continue and what to do next.
Considering where the questions are coming from and what the circumstances of the questioners are,
Erwin van Doorn thought about how to achieve answers?

Therefore the answer could be generated by establishing a traveling archive in a mobile unit and tour to the
questions to look for possible answers. These answers are supposed to be given at the location it came from as,
for example, an imaginative performance, video, drawing, installation and exhibition.
In the meantime each form of answer will be documented, archived and presented during this tour.

At FILTER you are able to explore some of these questions!

+++ENGLISH VERSION+++
FILTER, the project space for international contemporary art, hows a group exhibition that sets the focus on different forms of artistic collaboration. According to that, it concerns either the negotiation of independent artistic positions, that become part of a process in a group, or around collective projects, in which the individual handwriting is no longer recognizable. FILTER invites you to explore how different forms of collaboration, especially in an international frame, have been applied and which dynamics emerge at the same time.

As a new place for international contemporary art in Hamburg, FILTER opened its space on the 16th of December 2005. Under the title >>crash test<< three artistic positions are introduced in a group exhibit, that dedicate themselves to the current subjects of anxiety, power and security. Uncertainty.

The signal color red is a frequently recurring element in the work of Naomi Fisher (Miami). In her photo piece >>Whats a little blood amongst friends<< Naomi Fish ortrays her protagonists in interplay of forces out of sexuality, nature and power. The presentation of her body or those of others serve as a tool for the expression of destructi desire and love. Jeroen Jongeleen (Paris/Rotterdam), aka >>Influenza<<, questions the constant battle of architecture and advertising in his works. Frequently in the public space acting Jongeleen plays with the codes from the advertising industry in order to destroy its hegemony in space and question its existence. Expressly for the group show >>crash test<< Jongeleen works with the exhibition space. In a ca. 15-minutes documentary >>United States of Exceptions<< Olaf Sobczak (Hamburg) introduces his observational studies of security precautions in front of US-embassies in different countries. The constant armament and exclusion of the terrains as well as persons remind us of fortresses. What kind of influence this has on the environment and the function of the space itself is commented on here without words.

>crash test< runs from the 16th of December 2005 until 22nd of January 2006.

Januar 2006.
